12. Captain America: The First Avenger (2011)

It's a real shame that Captain America had to be the man out of time he's always been in the comics, because the historical setting of The First Avenger - and the chance to see him and The Howling Commandoes teaming up to kick Nazi tail - was a great diversion from the rest of the MCU.

Thanks to Steve McFeely and Chris Markus, the script is excellent and the central performances of Chris Evans and Hugo Weaving as Cap and Red Skull were incredibly good. So good, in fact, that it's a travesty that the angry-faced villain hasn't returned yet.

Cap is easily the most human of the Avengers (unlike Scott Lang turns up anyway) and this was the first movie in the franchise to really nail the idea of heart (because all three of the others already established were looking for it as part of their narrative). In that respect it has bags of charm, and it's impossible not to be taken in completely by the propaganda.

Perhaps you could say that it's a little understated, but vulgarity never suited the period setting, and the slightly different tone actually suited the culture clash at the character's centre.
