The Star Wars saga is an embarrassment of riches when it comes to great villains, with the original trilogy alone providing a few instant icons. George Lucas was drawing from classic literature and cinema while creating the original trilogy, and his mind for old-fashioned adventure storytelling allowed him to craft some truly mythic baddies that have stayed with audiences for decades.

The new movies have managed to come up with a couple of nasty folks too. That said, even Star Wars has a few duds when it comes to interesting bad guys, so this list will be the great equaliser by sorting out the very best of the very worst.

The omens were good that Captain Phasma would become an instant fan favourite. She was played by Gwendoline “Brienne Of Tarth” Christie, the trailers made her look like an important part of the story and her chrome design was a tribute to cult horror Phantasm; what could go wrong?

Giving her nothing to do, for starters. Phasma barely appears, and when she does turn up all she does is bark orders. Apparently she wants revenge on Finn for deserting, but if that’s the case she doesn’t do much about it.

Maybe in future movies she’ll become the badass we were hoping to see but for now, Phasma is basically The Force Awakens version of Boba Fett.
