Evil Dead: 10 Suggestions For The Franchise Moving Forward

Evil Dead Logos So Evil Dead wasn't the horrific flaming bag left of refuse on the doorstep of fans worldwide. This is the good news, because considering early on Diablo Cody was announced as being a player in the whole process, on top of the usual remake fears, it didn't look good. Thankfully Fede Alvarez and company managed to put together a decent sequel that could also double as a reboot/remake. (Take that, The Thing!) The bad news part of the equation though is that the film, while exciting and tense, didn't really have that much character to speak of. In fact, we get the bare minimum of brother/sister stories between heroin addict/possessed patient zero Mia and her heroic brother David; not to mention we only get names and bare character shells for each of the other participants. The franchise is at a crossroads, and we need to be careful going forward if we want to put the correct button on the series. That in mind, here's 10 things that Evil Dead 2, Army of Darkness 2, the final seventh film will have to do in order to finish everything up correctly. Warning: Spoilers for pretty much anything Evil Dead.

10. Fede Alvarez & Sam Raimi Need To Work Together

Raimi v Alvarez With the new Evil Dead film, Fede Alvarez introduced a new visual and storytelling language of his own, rather than parrot Raimi's "horror by way of The Three Stooges" formula. Nothing against Raimi's formula, but if we're going to re-introduce the Evil Dead franchise to the audience of today, then we're going to have to give them the Platinum Dunes-esque treatment they're used to seeing advertised. Only, you know, this is an actual good film with actual scares and without Michael Bay in sight. However, with Army of Darkness 2 and the final crossover installment also planned, we need Sam Raimi to continue to do his thing as well. We've seen shades of his horror roots in Drag Me To Hell, so it's not a gigantic stretch for him to return to the world of Ash and the Deadites. Army of Darkness 2 is the perfect project for him to get back into the saddle, as well as formally welcome Bruce Campbell back into the fold. (That stinger at the end of the remake should NOT be wasted.) This of course leaves us with the final installment that promises to be a crossover between both Evil Dead universes. Considering the Necromicon can open inter-dimensional/temporal portals between the living and the dead, opening a convenient corridor between Raimi and Alvarez's franchises isn't impossible. The two franchise heads need to be on board to properly bid farewell to the monster that they've created.
