Mutual Assured Destruction: 10 Nuclear War Movies

xde When I was an undergraduate, I studied a module titled The International Politics of Nuclear Weapons. They have sort of stuck in my mind ever since. The potential for MAD - mutual assured destruction - was a spectre that lingered over the decades in the Cold War era. Thank goodness by the time I became politically conscious, they were stringing up Michael Ceaucescu or I would have been a nervous wreck. Apocalyptic scenarios have always been a big hit with me. I guess that's why I love zombies so much. Nuclear weapons are also particularly good on the apocalyptic front and like zombies, nukes scare the bejaysus out of you. You only have to look at the fuss North Korea caused by detonating a nuclear missile the other day. Yes the Cold War is over but nukes are here to stay. It is not too late to join me in getting a second wind of nuclear paranoia and to sit down and crap your pants at the nuclear apocalyptic visions I have conjured up for you. It's all so fabulously nihilistic, I can't wipe this huge grin off my face...

My first film watched was Carrie aged 2 on my dad's knee. Educated at The University of St Andrews and Trinity College Dublin. Fan of Arthouse, Exploitation, Horror, Euro Trash, Giallo, New French Extremism. Weaned at the bosom of a Russ Meyer starlet. The bleaker, artier or sleazier the better!
