With Chris Nolan’s Dark Knight Trilogy quickly fading into the past, we’re looking forward now to what Warner Bros. are planning to do with the property. With no more Nolan and no more Christian Bale, the series is left without its two biggest draws, but that doesn’t mean for a second that the franchise is dead and buried. If Schumacher didn’t kill it, nothing will.
Even though The Dark Knight Rises didn’t quite manage to usurp The Avengers as highest grossing comic book movie of all time, it still made a Bat-tonne of cash for Warner Bros. – $898.3 million and counting worldwide, with the series being worth $1.7 billion in its completion (source: BoxOfficeMojo).
It’s safe to say that with numbers like that, it’s probably a matter of months before a reboot is officially announced, particularly when you consider the Justice League movie that’s definitely coming our way, failing some cataclysmic event that ends the world this year in line with the Aztec calendar.
And of course with a new Batman movies comes an entirely new set of faces assuming the roles of the characters – a new Batman, a new Alfred, potentially a new Joker and of course, who could forget, a brand new Jim Gordon.
Gordon is an immensely important part of the Batman canon and so casting him is right is crucial; especially should the new director want to keep him fresh and develop him further – which is going to be essential going forward in the pursuit of keeping the Batman world fresh.
So with that in mind, I put my mind on who I’d cast as the Commissioner of the GCPD, if I were ever put in the enviable position of making a Batman movie – after I’d finished calling everyone I’d ever met to tell them the news of course. Let’s get down to it.

Cranston is the obvious choice… he already did a great turn as Gordon in the animated Year One film, would be good to see that translated into a live action film!
If they are going to completely reboot the Batman franchise anew with a fresh cast, new director, writers, etc., then Bryan Cranston is the man for the job. If, on the off chance, Nolan decides to continue his version of Batman, he should certainly re-enlist the services of Gary Oldman. If they are going straight into a Justice League franchise, the character of Jim Gordon would probably be a bit part, at best – too small a part for the talents of Cranston or Oldman – and should maybe be left out entirely.
I’m inclined to agree with you here. Hopefully though, Jim Gordon will one day be explored in more depth, as he’s a fantastic character.
The more I’m thinking about it the more it’s obvious that if they can get Bryan Cranston to play Gordon they need to do it, he’d be just about perfect. I do like the Daniel Day-Lewis idea because just Oldman he sinks himself into a role and would do a great job, but Cranston is perfect for part.
Uhm, how about Bryan Cranston?
Bryan Cranston or Terry O’ Quinn.
William Hurt probably wouldn’t be bad either.
Wow, I thought I was the only one who saw Bryan Cranston as a potential Jim Gordon before reading this, so I was pleasantly surprised to see him as #1 on the list. Granted, he did voice Gordon for the animated Batman Year One movie, but how many voice actors not only embody the character both in voice and physical presence? That’s probably what has always prevented Mark Hamill from playing a live-action Joker. He might have the best Joker voice ever, but he doesn’t much look like Joker.
NOOO I want a sequel, then the Justice League, NOT A REBOOT. Dark Knight has many talented actors like Gary Oldmam, Morgan Freeman, Ledger ..!
