The dust has now well and truly settled in the wake of The Dark Knight Rises and Nolan is now doubt taking a well-earned break to count his cash. And that task alone would probably take the better part of a month (hyperbole of course, rich dudes have machines for that sort of thing).
By most accounts, Nolan’s take on the Dark Knight was a resounding success, although many of the more rabid fans of the character felt somewhat alienated by the franchise (myself included, but that’s not for now, I made my peace through writing THIS ARTICLE).
However you felt about the current Batman franchise, the fact remains that the tone is soon to shift. With Chris Nolan and Christian Bale’s departure from the property, and a new Justice League movie seeming more likely by the day, it’s safe to say that Batman will be appearing on our screens again in one form or another, and in the near future.
Whether he’s in a reboot or he’s simply so commercially known by now that he’s just in the Justice League movie without introduction is yet to be revealed. But we can’t imagine for a second that Warner Bros. Studio’s got their fill of our hard earned cash from The Dark Knight franchise. Movie studios can never make enough money.
With that in mind, we decided to consider ten of the things we most want to see in a new Batman movie. Because one way or another, it’ll happen eventually.

Nice article. Without making it a complete rip off, I’d love to see the Arkham Asylum/City version on the big screen. It ticks all the areas you mentioned: Detective, more Villians, more gadgets, grey & black and the Joker.
I loved TDKR but the one thing a don’t like is Nolan’ version of Gotham. I would like to see a grimier, darker and more like the Gotham from the comic books. The closest we came to that was in BB when the fear gas is released.
Now we’ve seen this trilogy, I would like to see villians like Killer Croc (nice reference in TDKR from Blake).
The 2 main influences on the next film (if there is one) are Nolan’ trilogy and Arkham Asylum/City (which in many peoples eyes is a far greater interpretation) so a mixture of these 2 variations would be sweet!
Liam I agree with you, that I would love to see an arkham asylum take on batman in the next reboot. Those games are a great take on batman, but anyway…
This article makes a lot of interesting point but I can’t help but day that you are forgetting the fact that any comic book movie is a adaption not a replica, which sounds like what your asking for. I would love to see a full decked out bat cave and his many gadgets but it would be or could be on the verge of cartoonish. I mean you can nit pick Nolan batman trilogy all you want one thing that I think that counters your arguments is that Nolan went for a realistic take on batman to were you could almost believe held actually exist. And taking that for nothing less than what it is, nolan’s trilogy was great. What you are saying is easier said than done. It’s is easy for the comics to write about all this and it come across realistic but translating that isn’t so easier. That’s why I don’t really get your avengers reference because the comics are much like the movie, colorful and spectacle, so its easier to translate to a movie; while batman comics are gritty with the decked batcave and gadgets. And translating that isn’t as easy. Maybe your trying to say that you just want more batman aspects in the reboot but it doesn’t sound like that.
Also dont see the big issue with the batman suit, for nolan’s version or future batman movies. Afterall he is human, he isn’t superman, so having a body suit to protect him seems to work better than having a spandex suit for a live action movie. He can still have a Nolan version of the bat suit and still be a kickass batman. It just seems like some of the stuff your suggesting is what lead to two previous versions of batman before Nolan trilogy, they attempted to be like the comics and failed.
But I do without a doubt again with you on the omnipresent villainy. the new franchise doesn’t need to kill off or get rid of a villain in order to bring a new one in.
I really enjoyed all of Nolan’s Batman films, he did a very good job. I believe he won’t make anymore but I’m sure that someone else will make one in the future. As much as I loved Nolan’s films, for how dark and realistic (as realistic as you can make a superhero) he made them, I’d love to see a more comic book version. I can’t think who would be best to direct though, as most directors that are currently going through my head aren’t known for making good films.
This site sucks. You heavily layered on the anticipation for tdkr during the past year and have now resigned yourselves to heavily slagging off not only the film, but whole Nolan franchise (which you praised insurmountably in your hundreds of tdkr dedicated pieces). Has there been a complete overhaul in your staff? Whatever happened to consistency? For what its worth – I thoroughly enjoyed Nolans much needed take on batman, look at what the guys done to Hollywood. Studios don’t have the courage to go a year without a comic book sourced film. If the franchise is to be carried on, ‘terry mcguinnes’-esque, batman of the future.
The article writer is an idiot to suggest “more comic-booky” IN ANY WAY into the Batman movies. These ones worked because THERE WAS NO HOKEY COMIC BOOK BS.
No hokey comic book BS, except a man in a bat suit being the centre of the entire franchise; a concept inspired by and directly derived from a comic book.
Gentlemen,
All the writers have different opinions.
But yes, there are positive TDKR articles on WhatCulture: the official WhatCulture review gave the movie 5/5 stars, and my own article on the thematic and literary concerns of the TDKR spoke largely of the movie in positive terms.
You’re an idiot. You talk about The Batman Trilogy like Nolan got it wrong. He didn’t use detective skills? The suit wasn’t practical? Make it more like a comic book but be realistic? Reboot the series so we can see another Joker even though Heath Ledger was phenomenal? Hitgirl was what Robin is without the ultraviolence and profanity and that’s why hes awesome? The violence and profanity WAS the reason she was awesome!
Stop complaining! Count your blessings you were lucky enough to witness what a Batman series should be. You talk like your a Batman fan because you can talk about the order of Robins? You’re disrespecting Batman with your sad, pathetic critique.
More gadgets? You sick dude. You just sick.
