Oscars 2019 Nominations: 13 Biggest Shocks, Snubs & Surprises

9. Shock: Christopher Robin - Best Visual Effects

This isn't quite the shock it would've seemed a few months ago, since it was on the shortlist of films eligible, which had been whittled down to just 10 movies.

Still, it was hard to imagine Christopher Robin, which had largely come and gone without making much of a dent in the cultural conversation nor on the awards scene, being nominated here. And yet, so it is.

It's not undeserved either. The detailing work on Pooh and co does look absolutely great (in a similar, if less obvious, way to how The Jungle Book did well here a few years ago), and it's better to see the academy go with this than the more obvious choice Black Panther, which had some major CGI issues in its third act.
