Ralph Breaks The Internet Review: 5 Ups & 4 Downs

A competent if underwhelming sequel.

Ralph Breaks the Internet is out now in UK cinemas - a week after its US release - and the critical response so far has been nearly enough on-par with the beloved 2012 original.

It's tough to escape the feeling that many critics went a little easy on the animated sequel, though, which while efficient and entertaining to a point, is also a fairly inconsistent rendition of an idea filled with so much more potential.

Braced somewhat awkwardly between the self-aware brilliance of The Lego Movie and the slack naffness of The Emoji Movie - OK, it's far closer to Lego than Emoji, fear not - Wreck-It-Ralph's second outing is a complacent sequel that knows how to push audience's nostalgia buttons even if there's precious little of substance beneath the surface.

Few are likely to come away from it annoyed or believing it to be a bad movie, but given the smarts and sensitivity of the original, this is an acceptable also-ran follow-up that could've been so, so much more...
