Ralph Breaks The Internet Review: 5 Ups & 4 Downs
Downs...
4. The Internet Humour Feels Dated & Lazy
The idea of Ralph (John C. Reilly) and Vanellope (Sarah Silverman) venturing out into the Internet is rife with possibilities, so it's a huge shame that the treatment of the World Wide Web here feels so lifelessly simplistic and outdated.
Even accepting the basically unavoidable abundance of product placement throughout the movie, the gags about eBay auctions, the Dark Net, pop-up adverts, cat videos and the mysterious YouTube algorithm are all written with a shocking lack of wit or humour.
Almost every gag is the lowest-common denominator one in order to appeal to the widest audience possible, recycling Internet ribbing that felt old a decade ago, rather than doing anything particularly creative, intelligent or particularly funny with the idea.
This is especially disappointing as it's at the expense of the first movie's greater focus on video games.
There are moments in this film that feel as unsophisticated as The Emoji Movie, and as a result this sequel is likely to age pretty badly in the coming years.
