Ranking April 2016's Movies - From Worst To Best

April typically sees summer blockbuster season in full swing, and 2016 has been no exception. This month, studios began trotting out their most expensive tentpoles, broad comedies landed with varying results, and some artier offerings slipped in wherever they could find room.

After the horror show of Batman v Superman last month, it's a relief that the year's most anticipated superhero movie (Captain America: Civil War) didn't suffer the same fate as it rolled out intentionally at the end of April, but did its effusively positive reviews make it the best-reviewed film of the month? A few ferocious indie hits definitely had something to say about that.

So, what does May bring us? The Angry Birds Movie, Neighbours 2: Sorority Rising, Alice Through the Looking Glass and X-Men: Apocalypse. Let the battle for summer supremacy, both critically and in terms of box office, begin.

Box Office: The film fell short of its projected $11 million opening weekend, which against a $25 million budget will make it scarcely successful in the long run, and easily the lowest-grossing of the Garry Marshall day-themed romantic comedies.

Verdict: What did you really expect, honestly? Critics are calling Mother's Day a Razzie contender and the worst film in this trilogy nobody asked for, and rightly so.

The humour falls flat and the plot lines are dull and trite, designed with only the most accommodating, forgiving and undemanding audience in mind. And yes, the insane cast, including Jennifer Aniston, Julia Roberts, Kate Hudson and Jason Sudeikis, are clearly just here to pick up an easy paycheck.
