Ryan Reynolds: 5 Awesome Performances And 5 That Sucked

There's been a lot of ups and downs for the Merc with a Mouth.

Those that have entered into the realms of Hollywood hearthrobery can go one of three ways: there's the pretty face and not much upstairs approach to acting; in kind, there is the type that can thesp hard while looking pretty if they try really hard, and, best of all, that rare breed of actor that can light the screen up in whatever guise, and still snag the plaudits.

Ryan Rodney Reynolds falls into category B; while he's got the chops to turn in a bravura performance, any attempt at a chameleon-like change has so far ended with a film that will feature at the latter end of this list. But that's not to say he isn't close to something great.

Sure, the likes of DiCaprio, Bale and Hardy can go from being hunks in trunks to misters with ruffled up whiskers, but Reynolds uses his shark-grin charm to his advantage, turning in pretty boy performances that constantly go against type - from knife-flinging superheroes (Deadpool is already his signature role) all the way to scene stealing bit parts and cool indie lead roles. The best is still yet to come from Canada's finest, with the promise of some captivating turns to come in the likes of intriguing thriller, Criminal, which is already on his slate, as well as the bound-to-be-a-franchise Deadpool. Let's face it, that character alone could keep him in clover for a very long time to come.

To coincide with the release of Marvel/Fox's fast quipping movie, let's take a look back and celebrate all that is good and gooey in Reynolds's body of work.
