Ryan Reynolds: 5 Awesome Performances And 5 That Sucked
5 Awesome Performances...
5. Hal Jordan / Green Lantern - Green Lantern
It's hard to fathom just why Green Lantern wasn't the franchise starter everyone thought it would be. The concept itself - Yank pilot stumbles across a dead alien, finds a mystic ring and joins an intergalactic order - has endured in ink over the years, with the likes of Geoff Johns and Darwyn Cook writing key storyline to keep the character fresh. The film project itself gathered together a cast including, of course, Ryan Reynolds, Mark Strong and Peter Sarsgaard and, with director Martin Campbell at the helm, this had the trappings of being a fun intergalactic comic romp, released before Guardians Of The Galaxy made space romps fun.
At the centre of this slightly ham-fisted and visually noisy attempt at bringing Hal Jordan and his band of merry Green Lantern Corps to the big screen, though, is a smooth and spirited performance from Reynolds. Seriously. Be it switching on the charm in and out of the suit, to zipping about boasting some action moves during the film's high flying scenes, he captures the character origins shtick really well. Quite simply, he's the best thing in the film.
Alas, the film failed to shine with critics and fell short at the box office, dimming the chance of a sequel ever getting the, ahem, green light. Another superhero franchise beckons for Reynolds now, though.
