Spectre Reviews: 11 Early Reactions You Need To Know

9. It's A Combination Of New & Old Bond

After Casino Royale radically reinvented Bond, Quantum Of Solace and Skyfall followed the same lead by touting a Bond characterised by thuggish brutality, Bourne-style stunts and a far darker, more serious tone, a reaction to general audience fatigue with the camp and silliness of Pierce Brosnan's movies. Though this stern approach gave the series its biggest box office success by far with Skyfall, Spectre nevertheless tries to plant its feet in-between being a gritty, modern spy flick and an homage to Bond classics of old. Critics mostly agree that the film does a solid job of attempting to please both the hardcore (possibly older) crowd and the casuals, who are more likely to appreciate the Christopher Nolan-esque approach. Several reviews noted how the film's unexpected silliness hearkens back to the Sean Connery era, while still not losing sight of the successful fine-tuning which has made Craig's run as Bond one of the best so far.
