Star Wars Episode IX is officially a go.

With the cast in place - including Mark Hamill and Carrie Fisher - J.J. Abrams has taken to Twitter (with his first post, no less) to confirm that production is now underway on the final instalment of the Skywalker saga, writing:

"Bittersweet starting this next chapter without Carrie, but thanks to an extraordinary cast and crew, we are ready to go. Grateful for @rianjohnson and special thanks to George Lucas for creating this incredible world and beginning a story of which we are lucky to be a part. #IX"

Abrams also revealed the first photo from the set of the new movie, and although it's out of focus you can make out John Boyega's Finn, who is sporting a new vest, and likely Poe Dameron (Oscar Isaac) next to him in the Millennium Falcon. There's not a whole lot more to go on, but it's nonetheless exciting that things are properly getting underway and, we can probably expect a few more teases from Abrams as things progress.
