Suicide Squad: 5 Ups & 5 Downs From Trailer 2
It's not all plain sailing for DC's bad guys...
It doesn't matter how angry or upset or disappointed you currently are with DC and Warner Bros for their incredibly frustrating mess-up of Batman v Superman, it's impossible not to be hyped for the impending release of Suicide Squad. It's braver, it's darker and more than anything it's a cooler project than anything DC have made so far, and all of that (apart, perhaps, from the race to darkness) should be embraced by comic book movie fans.
Even with Batman v Superman's ominous shadow cast over the film, the opportunity to follow some of DC's biggest cult anti-heroes and villains down the rabbit hole in a heist movie with shades of The Dirty Dozen to it is a hell of a thing. That both trailers so far have managed to be mostly brilliant is further cause for celebration.
But now that the breakdown dust is settling and we've all had time to watch the so-called Blitz trailer, what were the major take-aways - both positive and negative - from the teaser?
First, the positives...
5 Ups
5. Amanda Waller Is Already Wholly Hateable
It would have been easy to dismiss Amanda Waller as a supporting character who sets up the Squad and then disappears into a cloud of hate with a comedy swish of her cape, but it appears that Viola Davos' performance is going to be subtle and with the kind of coolness you can really get on board with.
Marvellously, she doesn't require the same sort of histrionics as Jesse Eisenberg's Lex Luthor to appear completely terrifying and thoroughly unlikable. She already appears to be the archetypal cold hard bitch, willing to do whatever it takes to uphold her sense of order and what is "right".
But there's enough restraint so far to suggest that she would work as a constant presence in the franchise, rather than her being killed off at the end for whatever she's done to Deadshot to keep him "interested". And despite DC movies' habit of jumping the shark, keeping her around as a constant for the sequel is arguably the most important thing to set up.
