5. Oh Littlefinger, Why Aren’t You As Smart As In The Books?
It’s always good to see an alumni from The Wire or Game of Thrones, and with Irish actor Aiden Gillen, you get two for the price of one. But boy, what a stupid character he played in this film.
At the beginning of the film we are introduced to Bane via a rather excellent Inception-like set piece involving Bane’s mercenaries assaulting the plane of Gillen’s CIA agent. Bane boards the plane himself by masquerading as a grunt with a sack of his head.
I could probably gripe about how it would be obvious that the plane simply didn’t crash, since its wings were torn off long before it hit the ground, or that Bane’s plan would have failed if one of the many armed men on the plane had simply shot him. However one can’t help but wonder at why the CIA just didn’t look at their faces before putting them on the plane. Seriously, all they had to do was remove the sack from Bane’s head and the whole master plan would’ve been ruined. Way to go, Littlefinger.

I also found quite an issue with how Bruce Wayne made his way back from the desert prison in what may likely be another country into a completely locked down and quarantined Gotham without any money, food or water. With enough time to stop the bomb too

thats what i thought aswell, lots of plot holes in this film!!
He a little under a month to get back to gotham, and getting in wasn’t that hard, as shown by the special ops guys entering in supply trucks. Also, he brought supplies in his clothes before he rose from the pit. And he still had many friends in high places.
How do you figure he had a month? It all happened within 23 hours. What am I (or you) missing here?
Wow! You are a moron, That film studies class really payed off.
How is he a moron? In what ways are his points invalid?
In addition to the problem of Bruce Wayne magically appearing back in Gotham, I also found it hard to believe that enormous bags of supplies were being lowered to the police officers “trapped” in the sewers, yet nobody ever seemed to think about lifting the men out the same way.
Also, apparently nobody in Gotham has ever heard of a boat to get off the island.
Also, what was Gordon doing for 4 months and 29 days before finally deciding to capture the bomb??
Gordon was at home washing his tights!
Bane was feeding the police to give the people of Gotham hope. The river was frozen and the us military was keeping people in. And what could Gordon do? He only got the jammer after Batman gave it to him, and if they had tried to take the bomb, it would’ve been detonated before they could do anything. Next time you see a movie, pay attention, Ray.
Also – and I don’t pretend to be a nuclear expert or anything – but wouldn’t Gotham be utterly wrecked by radiation? Didn’t Nolan have Batman save Gotham’s twelve million people only for them all to suffer from radiation poisoning?
Neutron Bombs yield very low fallout after a high initial radiation blast. Gotham would be fine.
I agree with point 5, I dont mind the whole Robin aspect – Orphans and all that etc.
Yeah the bomb thing is obvious, but why not – it is Batman after all and it could/is a “real” world threat, again I didnt mind the Bat thing as it is Bruce and Lucious and no one seems to give Bruce the credit that he deserves and for the ending of the Batman well…
The ghost giving info thing, somethings people cant see what is right in front of there faces and it takes certain instances to trigger things to make them put things together…maybe – look at John blake, some how knowing about Bruce/Batman.
Maybe Bruce got back to Gotham because depending on the location of the prison he may of had 1 or 2 friends there that lent him a few quid to help him get back home and just maybe there might be a tunnel that goes straight from Wayne Manor into the city, mind you Bruce/Batman is spose to be the worlds greatest detective and managed to get into Gotham.
I also think Gordon would be ok being next to the device as we dont know what kind of shielding it has and hes only beside it for minutes as apose to hours or days – I think Gordon may have liked the hospital food and decided to stay for a while.
There are issues, but not major ones and yes there are plot holes but what film doesnt have them? To much thinking going on and Im good at that, but at the end of day it was a bloody good film and a fine end to a fantastic trilogy.
Like I said – its just a film.
I stopped reading at “but when Fox spoke this line I could have quite happily left the cinema – I knew how the film would end.”
This is absolutely one of the worst articles I’ve ever read in my life. I’ve been debating with plenty of people the plot of this film and never once has a single detractor thought up these dumbass criticisms because they’re seriously that friggin’ stupid. If Aiden Gillen took off the masks and saw Bane was among the prisoners what do you think he’d do? You think he wouldn’t take Bane on his plane anyways? This mercenary they’ve been hunting and desperately want to capture wouldn’t be brought back? Also, what does it matter how people think the plane crashed? The point was simply to make it seem like Dr. Pavel died. How the plane crashed, that there was foul play, doesn’t change that. Your complaints about the foreshadowing are dumb because you aren’t supposed to watch a film trying to guess the ending. Most people just sit there and let the film happen before them, they don’t wonder why one line was spoken at one point in the film. In fact, bringing up the auto-pilot earlier in the film could have been argued to be so people wouldn’t question him not using it at the end if the film DID end with him dying. Your article would be “he didn’t have auto-pilot?” if he died instead of “totally saw it coming, I’m the best”. Never mind that knowing what happens and seeing it are two different things, films are more about execution than they are about surprises. People who go see films to be surprised probably love Shyamalan flicks. Some of your problems are just you wanting the film to show you how every dot is connected, it’s not an actual plot hole you just needed a 10 hour film that shows how everything happened. How did Bruce get back into Gotham? How about he got some gear from his Bat Cave since that’s on a separate island from the main one, never mind the fact that only one bridge, the intact one, was actually being guarded. Bane’s men were too busy going about terrorizing the people of Gotham to watch for people coming in or out of the city, that’s why they warned about a trigger man, to give people an invisible boogeyman who could be anywhere to keep them from trying to leave or enter. The enemies being in the sewers is another very dumb complaint. Would it have really worked better for you if they showed how Bane and his mercenaries snuck into the sewers? He had connections with Daggett, they would have gone down there disguised as a construction crew, since he owns a construction company and his people were all in on it.
Great reply, all good points well made!
Of course every movie will have its flaws, and i agree with the author on numbers 2 and 5, but i think the others were just a way of expressing his hate towards the movie…come on whatculture, enough already! every day is a new ” let´s bash TDKR, it´s full of error articles”…
My biggest gripe with the film is Christian Bale. There is no need for the deep, gristly voice when he’s in the batman suit, especially when he’s talking to people who know who he is. he just sounds like he has laryngitis.
Although this film and Batman series is the most ‘realistic and gritty’ take on a superhero franchise people need to remember that is is still fantasy. Batman is a superhero, that’s how he managed to get back into Gotham unnoticed and that’s how, despite having no cartillage left in any of his knees’s, shoulders and everything else that is mentioned by the doctor all he does is put on a knee brace and he’s sorted.
Also, regarding the ending. I’ve seen the film twice so far and on both occasions people where gasping when Gordon-Levitt was ‘revealed’ as Robin in the end and when it showed that Mr Wayne was still alive after the bomb.
All in all, 1. it’s fantasy so it serves well to use your imagination when watching such films and 2. It can be said for a lot of people that they are given too much credit, especially those in the cinema when I watched it.
He uses the voice because he’s dangerously close to having dual personalities. Re-watch The Dark Knight. When he knocks out Harvey Dent at the party to protect him from the Joker, he speaks to Rachel in the Batman voice, although he’s still clearly dressed as Bruce, because he momentarily slipped into the Batman personality.
My problem with the Dark Knight rises was that there wasn’t enough ME in it. My friends rectified that by shooting their own fan film. Click my name to check it out.
wow, u mad? I love Batman as much as you do (and Nolan films) but this guy is accurate in everything… The script is sloppy, period. But the movie is so big that almost anyone can forgive and forget. Not me, Id hate to be a fanboy so… great article, Gavin.
You know, The Dark Knight(2008) was such a bad movie, all because of certain nitpicking details that I don’t contribute any imagination to.
For instance, as soon as the new District Attorney was introduced as “Harvey Dent”, I could have left the theatre. I consider myself bad at spotting foreshadowing, but we knew he’d turn evil. Big surprise.
Secondly, the Joker’s plan of having each ferry rigged to explode each other was such a plot device. How did they to set the whole thing up without anyone noticing? Wasn’t the city in lock down because of a bomb threat in the first place? So why is the security for these boats so non-existent? Also, oil drums is a poor way too explode a boat since they take up too much space, why not use different methods? Also, weren’t they trying to get as many people out of the island as possible? So why is there this room underneath that nobody thought to use? If you don’t want bombs to go off, don’t make it so easy. Some people would say it’s symbolism, that the Joker wanted to expose how savage humans were underneath. I call it obvious storytelling.
These are just two of the five reasons I use to justify to myself that I’m right in not liking a movie. Others include how the Joker didn’t know if he would be shot at the beginning of the film and how Batman left the Joker in his penthouse after saving Rachel, even though the Joker would have gone down the elevator to the ground floor when he left, essentially where Batman was at the time.
See how smart I am?
actually batman went for the joker to the ground floor after saving Rachel falling from the building…but the joker was too smart…he used the railway station that was routed into the Wayne tower(remember in batman begins) and got away…i know there is no scene in TDK where the existing railway system of Gotham is shown…but it was there in batman begins and as the TDK story is believed to be set in one years period after BB…i assume that the existing railway system might not have vanished….
Actually the batman might have gone for the joker after he saved Rachel from the fall…but the Joker being smart might have used the train and got away(remember the railway system that was routed into the Wayne tower in Batman Begins). Although there is no scene in the dark knight that shows the railway system but that is no indication that it did not exist in Gotham while the story took place.
One of the biggest issues I noticed in the film is one that generally goes unnoticed. When Bruce is in the hospital his doctor tells him that he has no cartilage in his legs. How did he manage to restore himself while in the prison later and with no gadgets? He was walking with a cane in the beginning of the movie; how could he fight Bane at all.
Beyond this, in the original serious, Batman has to wear a special suit in order to beat Bane, a mechanical one. What happened with that. Don’t get me wrong, I love the movie; but was Bane super human or just high off morphine. If so, how is he strong enough to break pillars and snap necks with his fingers?
