The Lego Batman Movie Review: 6 Ups & 4 Downs
Ups
6. "Holy References, Batman!"
If there's one thing the movie does better than anything else, it's feature an absolute treasure trove of references, to both Batman and general pop-culture, that will have fans poring over the film's Blu-ray again and again to catch every last Easter egg.
Both visually and within the film's script, it contains plentiful nods to just about every iteration of Batman there is, and only the most hardcore Batman fans are sure to catch them all.
There are niche super-villains like Egghead, nods to various Batman memes (such as "Some days you just can't get rid of a bomb!" and the classically corny shark repellent gag) and pretty much something referential in every single one of the movie's frames.
It is incredibly dense and great fun keeping your eyes peeled for winks at the audience, as the entire movie is basically 104 minutes of winking at the audience. That it manages to do this without coming off as obnoxious is an impressive feat.
