The Next Batman Will Be Robert Pattinson Or Nicholas Hoult

The two Brits reportedly make up the shortlist for Matt Reeves' upcoming Batman movie.

The new Batman has been found... almost. After a lot of various rumours over the past few years as to who would don the cape and cowl in Matt Reeves' forthcoming Batman movie - a lot of which happened while Ben Affleck was still officially attached, no less - the search has reportedly been narrowed down to two names: Robert Pattinson and Nicholas Hoult.

Variety broke the news that Pattinson had been tapped to play the role of Bruce Wayne in the movie, which is scheduled for release on June 25, 2021, but Deadline later countered that by saying while Pattinson does indeed have the edge, Warner Bros are also considering Hoult and no decision has yet been made. What seems clear, though, is that the new Batman is going to be one of these two guys, with Pattinson the more likely right now.

While the writing was on the wall for Affleck pretty much since he stepped down from directing the picture, it was only actually in January that his departure from the role was confirmed. Reeves wants to put his own spin on things, and there have been reports for some time that he wanted a considerably younger actor for his take on the Caped Crusader. Pattinson, at 33, and Hoult, at 29, both fit that brief.

Both have cropped up on various casting lists - including here and here - recently, although they're still very much likely to be divisive picks, especially Pattinson given his past history in Twilight. Both actors, however, have spent the last few years making some very interesting and eclectic choices when it comes to film roles, with Pattinson shedding his Edward Cullen image with great turns in the likes of The Rover and Good Time, and Hoult stealing scenes in movies as diverse as Mad Max: Fury Road and The Favourite. Pattinson also has a role in Christopher Nolan's new film, and if directors as great as Nolan and Reeves think he's the guy, then maybe it's because he's the guy. But then also, Batman fans should know by now to give castings a chance before leaping to outrage.

The movie is expected to go into production later this year, so we should get total confirmation on who the new Dark Knight is very soon.
