Top 10 Physically Disabled Film Characters

9. Toothless, Hiccup & Gobber - How to Train Your Dragon (2010)

There's a triple whammy of animated amputee characters in this film and an interesting approach to prosthetics.

First up is the Gobber the Belch (voiced by Craig Ferguson) coach to the young wannabe dragon slayers in the film. Gobber is missing one arm and one leg (both eaten by the same dragon) and has many interchangeable attachments for his missing arm including a hook, a hammer and a tankard for boozing.

Second up is the central dragon of the story, Toothless, who loses part of his tail and therefore the ability to fly when the central character, Hiccup, shoots him out of the sky with a mechanical gun. After they become friends Hiccup designs a replacement fin for Toothless' tail which means the dragon can fly once again but not without Hiccup along for the ride.

Finally the main character Hiccup Horrendous Haddock III (Jay Baruchel) loses his foot in the final battle of the film. He wakes up to find he's had prosthetic, designed by Gobber, fitted that looks a little like a a primitive version of the real-life 'blade' prosthesis.

This might not be the most meaningful film that comes to mind when comes to disabled characters but that's because none of the character's are ever labelled as disabled in an obvious way they're just part of the crew like all the others.
