Will anything top THAT moment in God of War?

Although it hasn't gotten off to the same blistering start as 2017, this year's selection of new video games has still been amazing. Between the likes of God of War, Sea of Thieves and Celeste, the first six months have birthed a more diverse library than ever, with the lack of a steady stream of huge AAA releases allowing more experimental or indie games to fill the gaps and find an audience they may have otherwise never received.

Consequently, it's been a difficult year to take stock of which titles have boasted the very best levels so far. Even some of the weaker games overall have enjoyed ridiculously strong stretches, peaking with brilliantly-designed missions or out-of-nowhere stages that eclipsed anything else they had to offer.

Constantly finding new ways to surprise and excite, there's been a real creative streak to this year's biggest titles, with imagination and ambition being far more important than flawless technical features or focus-tested fun, leading to some of the most satisfying individual video game levels in years.
