10 Cheapest Plot Twists In Gaming History

Sometimes the real bad guys are the developers themselves.

Video game narratives have gotten increasingly sophisticated in recent years. Back then, no one cared if they were playing the Citizen Kane of interactive media, it was all simple and easy; find the McGuffin, save the Princess, jump across the gaps, kill a few baddies in the process - all in a day's work. Nowadays story, character motivation, and genuine reasons to believe in your actions are becoming paramount. Each video game character now has some sort of tragic backstory we must all know about, we're reminded that for every moment you don't save Princess McGuffin (who happens to be your disguised badass sidekick with a haunted past this whole time) the world will end, and we're subtly lectured about deeper themes like morality and why killing is wrong. All whilst mowing down demons with a double-barrelled shotgun. Not that this is a bad thing. Truth be told, there is only so much developers can do to make stealing a car, level-grinding, or shooting things seem fresh. It seems only natural that video game boundaries are continually pushed on the narrative side. Drop in a few actual story elements, some tear-jerking character moments, and enough well-plotted story twists, and you have yourself a game that is rich in both gameplay and story. That€™s the theory anyway. Sometimes for every awesome knee-jerking video game plot twist we encounter - such as kickass bounty hunter revealing herself to be a hot blonde or how you were actually the bad guy chasing after Princess all along - there are those video game twists that make you feel so cheated that you might as well been playing a poker machine. Naturally, as this is all about plot twists, spoilers are rampant.

My life story is nothing special. I haven't cured ebola, I'm nowhere near stopping terrorism, and I'm still working on that climate change problem. Instead, all I've done so far is put a few hundred words together in an attempt to make people laugh. You can follow me at @Fry_ying_pan but don't be offended if I don't tweet back. It's usually because I've spent too long trying to think up a witty response that the reply window has closed.
