10 Haunting Video Game Moments We’ll Never Forget

1. The Splicer With The Baby (BioShock)

We've taken our first troubling steps into the underwater city of Rapture and had our first encounters with a hulking Big Daddy and spooky Little Sister, but one of BioShock's most powerfully haunting moments comes a few minutes later, when we hear a female splicer singing a sinister lullaby while hunched over a pram. Her mind seems to unravel before us as we approach. "She's gone! Why did you take her?" she screams upon seeing the player and launching into a frenzied attack.

BioShock is filled with creepy moments, especially in its opening few hours, but no instant encapsulates the terrifying city of Rapture more than this. It's a short and simple scene but does so much to demonstrate the tragic downfall of the once-thriving city and its once-brilliant inhabitants, showcasing a perfect example of the game's emergent style of storytelling.

The word 'cinematic' is thrown around a lot when talking about video games, but everything about this moment is so well framed that it could easily have come from a blockbuster horror movie, and this is just one incredible way in which director Ken Levine brought his vision to life.

Mike Pedley hasn't written a bio just yet, but if they had... it would appear here.
