Can you believe we're almost three years into the new console generation? It doesn't seem like the latest offerings from Sony and Microsoft have been on the market for two minutes, and yet after huge announcements this year, it's clear that both studios have a keen eye on the future.

Although the era of the PS3 and the Xbox 360 lasted an astonishing eight years, it doesn't look like the current consoles are going to enjoy the same lifespan. While the idea of new machines coming so soon seems improbable, it's not as though this kind of thing hasn't happened before: there were only five years between PS1 and PS2, and a mere four between Xbox and Xbox 360, .

Hell, at E3 this year Microsoft more or less showed their entire hand, announcing the "most powerful console of all time", Project Scorpio, for release next fall. While the company hasn't officially confirmed that this new machine is indeed the first glimpse of the next generation, based on the insane specs released so far it's looking likely.

Which means that a lot of the games that have been promised to players so far this generation probably won't even be available until these new consoles drop. Between hugely anticipated sequels and brand new titles that have been teased for ages, whenever these hugely anticipated games come out you probably won't be playing them on the same hardware you have now.

10. Halo 6

Likelihood: 6/10

Although we’re currently over two-thirds into the latest Master Chief trilogy, after the middling response to Halo 5 it looks as though developer 343 Studios could be taking a bit longer than anticipated to craft the perfect ending to their saga.

Because, while a good chunk of the fanbase enjoyed the latest offering in the series (the multiplayer component especially went down a storm), it’s clear that the main narrative left much to be desired. Marred by mixed messages and plain old false advertising, it wouldn’t be a surprise if 343 took a few years out to give players a truly meaty campaign to make up for Halo 5's lousy excuse for one.

However, with that said it wouldn't look good for the studio if they were only able to complete one game every new console generation. With Halo 4 on the Xbox 360, 5 on the One and 6 on the Scorpio, this latest trilogy could be seen as a mismatched failure.

So while having Halo as a launch title on the next wave of consoles would be a huge win for Microsoft, it’s just as likely that 343 will finish their trilogy on the current generation before moving onto new and exciting adventures for the Project Scorpio.
