9. Horizon: Zero Dawn

Despite not featuring the biggest open world or having the deepest RPG systems, once you jump into Horizon: Zero Dawn you'll never want to leave.

Boasting one of the most original sci-fi universes of the last decade or so, the game's ravished post-apocalyptic landscape is full of new, interesting things to find - not least the giant robotic dinosaurs that are at the top of the food chain in this new world.

More than just nice to look at, manipulating the ecosystem of these monsters and fighting against them provides a gameplay loop that can't be found in any other open world game.

The enemy A.I. is diverse and entirely dependent on the situation and enemy type, meaning that action rarely devolves into the same predictable patterns. Instead the game encourages variation in your approach, nudging you towards specific tactics depending on the situation.

Between laying traps, targeting weak spots, and even pitting the robots against each other and watching them hash it out from a cosy vantage point, there are plenty of ways to tackle every situation in Horizon: Zero Dawn, and you'll spend hours trying to exploit each one.
