10 Potential Plot Twists That Could Ruin Upcoming Video Games

A plot twist in a video game can be a beautiful thing: it can deepen the meaning of everything that came before and transform great characters into iconic ones, yet in the wrong hands, it can also derail everything that's awesome about a game and leave fans with an unshakable sour taste in their mouths.

For every Bioshock or Spec Ops: The Line, there's a Final Fantasy X or Mass Effect 3, and it's safe to say that many of the most anticipated upcoming games are likely to come armed with at least one giant plot twist.

Though it's easy enough to trust the likes of Naughty Dog with delicately delivering a brutal reveal, nobody's perfect, and it's not outside the realm of possibility that these huge games will trip over their own implausible, unnecessary and straight-up cruel potential plot twists.

10. Aerith No Longer Has To Die - Final Fantasy VII Remake

The Twist: Square Enix will give fans the chance to avoid Aerith's demise at the hands of Sephiroth, allowing players to proceed through the rest of the game with her as a party member.

Why It Could Ruin The Game: Because Aerith's death in the original game is one of the most iconic and emotionally devastating video game moments of all time, and to essentially retcon it for fan service purposes would feel like a betrayal of what fans loved about it in the first place.

How Likely Is It?: Square Enix makes a lot of bad creative decisions, but screwing with arguably the best moment from any of their games would be too misguided, even for them. It's not impossible, as it's already been confirmed that certain aspects of the game are being updated for a modern audience, but it's thankfully pretty unlikely. 2/10
