When Titanfall was first released, it felt like the entire world was talking about it. The game was praised for its use of mechs and free-running to freshen up the multiplayer shooter genre, and some were going so far as to call it the next Call of Duty. Just a few weeks after the game's release, however, the servers had seemingly run dry.

What happened?

The exact answer to that question will vary from player to player, but the basic problem with Titanfall is that it lacked true substance. Weapons and levels were generic, the bot system contributed nothing of merit, custom games were non-existent, the card and perks system felt tacked-on and the modes that the game launched with failed to really take advantage of the shooters concept.

The recently confirmed single-player mode is nice and things like swords and grappling hooks are neat, but so far we're still waiting to see if Respawn has done enough to address the game's most substantial shortcomings.
