Mario is arguably the most famous and most recognizable video game character of all time, perhaps even more famous than Nintendo, the company which he originates from. That being said, Mario wasn't always as distinct and polished as he is now, the gaming industry was still in it's infancy when Shigeru Miyamoto created the carpenter come-plumber originally known as 'Jumpman' or 'Mr. Video' in 1981. Gaming was too early a concept for it to have defined character templates, in many ways, Nintendo's conception of Mario created the mould for successful character creation going forward. The name, profession, characteristics and abilities of Mario have changed multiple times over the years to make him the popular icon he is now, in fact, many of the details that made Mario unique as a character came solely out of consequence. With that process of evolution comes several details that Nintendo would rather leave in the past of history's most popular gaming mascot, be it a bad decision, a simple oversight or a mistake that has dire implications in retrospect.
