10 Things Nintendo Wants You To Forget About Mario

10. That Super Mario Bros - The Movie Ever Existed

This entry is common knowledge, but never the less, Nintendo would prefer you forget about Super Mario Bros - The Movie. Upon release, critics universally panned the film with most naming the script as the primary reason it was so bad, Siskel and Ebert in particular gave the film two thumbs down and called it one of the worst films of 1993. Bob Hoskins who starred as Mario in the film got drunk several times before filming just to get himself through the day according to co-star John Leguizamo, and later called it 'the worst thing he ever did' and that 'it was a nightmare'. Shigeru Miyamoto said that while 'It was a very fun project that they put a lot of effort into, the one thing that I still have some regrets about is that the movie may have tried to get a little too close to what the Mario Bros. video games were'. The movie was always going to try to cash in on the popularity of the franchise in order to sell tickets, though it seems Nintendo were hoping for something better that tried to entertain as a stand-alone project. Given the reception and general opinion of the Super Mario Bros film, it's understandable why Nintendo would try to cut all ties to the project.
