People often wonder why games take years and years to make. Contrary to what most people think, when the development schedule for a game ticks over from months to years, the developers usually aren't sitting around procrastinating or twiddling their thumbs.

The development time needed for a video game these days is gradually increasing, due to the 'need' for more sophisticated storytelling, the search for gameplay originality, innovative technology - and an incredible amount of detail and polish needed before a game ships (unless you're EA, Ubisoft or Warner Bros.).

Not only is every single detail polished to within an inch of its life, but developers are taking advantage of the tools they have in order to squeeze in as many fine little details and easter eggs as they possibly can. Unfortunately, all this effort from the team towards a greater gaming experience isn't always fully appreciated by those on the receiving end, as the amount of time and effort put in is generally lost upon those who just want to shoot any and everything in the face, or simply look for the next emotionless set-piece.

With that in mind, here are 10 games that were given insane levels of attention to detail by their developers, and yet the effort flew right over the heads of almost everyone else.

10. WWE 2K15's Developers Injured Themselves Capturing Moves

The WWE video game series is one of the many factory line sports games that come out every year, simply because they can. Whilst the quality of the games in the WWE series ranges from pretty damn good to downright bad, the developers did the gaming equivalent of method acting to make sure 2K15 was to be their best yet.

To get everything accurate and correct in terms of animations, facial expressions, entrances and more, they did hours upon hours of painstaking research, much like cramming for an exam or project. They wanted to get the motion-capture aspects of wrestling just perfect, so they decided to get a full-regulation wresting ring and actually motion-capture themselves jumping off the top rope, taking hits and bumps, slams etc.

After countless bruises, busted knees, and spilt blood imitating famous finishing moves poorly, the developers learned the hard way that play-fighting is probably just as difficult - if not more so - than actual fighting.

Unfortunately, WWE 2K15 didn't exactly resonate well with critics or gamers despite the literal blood spilled by the developers in the name of fake-fighting.

My life story is nothing special. I haven't cured ebola, I'm nowhere near stopping terrorism, and I'm still working on that climate change problem. Instead, all I've done so far is put a few hundred words together in an attempt to make people laugh. You can follow me at @Fry_ying_pan but don't be offended if I don't tweet back. It's usually because I've spent too long trying to think up a witty response that the reply window has closed.
