12 Upcoming Video Games That Might Be Surprisingly Awesome

With the vast array of trailers, gameplay demos and hands-on press impressions that typically emerge before a game actually hits stores these days, it's pretty easy to sniff out a stinker of a video game long ahead of release.

That said, an unconvincing marketing campaign and suspicious lack of reviews aren't always the kiss of death: just look at 2016's shockingly good Doom reboot for proof perfect of that.

While it wouldn't surprise anyone if these 12 games tanked with critics and general gamers alike, there's at least some mounting evidence that, in fact, they just might soar above and beyond all those pessimistic expectations.

It's certainly sensible to keep your expectations in check regarding even the best-looking upcoming games, but conversely, gamers might be a little too eager to write these games off before they've had a chance to fully prove themselves.

If even only a couple of them cross the 80 mark on Metacritic, it'd be a sure cause for celebration...
