11. Galerians

Resident Evil 3 Nemesis
Polygon Magic

Released at a time when Resident Evil fervour was high, Galerians eschewed traditional gun-based combat over the psychic powers the protagonist Rion has. Keeping the fixed camera angles of its zombie contemporary, Galerians still employing a conservative inventory system, much like Resident Evil.

The psychic abilities that Rion has are maintained by a drug that tops up his usage of them, and these are a finite source. Furthermore, using too much of his power too often resulted in Rion suffering a rage-like burst that would kill any around him, but also himself if used for too long.

Set in a similar vein to Free Radical's Second Sight, with amnesia and experimentation gone wrong, the story and look of the game was more emulative of Eastern anime, in particular the aforementioned Akira. Rogue AI's and god complexes aplenty, Galerians was a great twist on the template that Capcom laid out with its series.

Spawning a sequel on the PS2 a few years after, nothing much has happened to Galerians since. If you have the inclination for more old school Resi-style games, its worth digging this or its sequel out.
