12. Martian Gothic: Unification

Resident Evil 3 Nemesis
Take-Two Interactive

Set on Mars (surprisingly) in the then-future of 2019, the base Vita-01 has an almost Event Horizon-y feel about it. After a short and cryptic message to Earth, a three-man investigation team is sent in to find out what's what. Separated early on by unforeseen circumstances, our plucky team has to piece together what's happened via individual exploration and radio contact.

Featuring a novel approach on the "divide and conquer" notion, the game would actually fail you if two of the three ever actually met face to face. Character swapping also happened in real time, meaning that if you left your character in an open area before swapping, they were vulnerable to attack.

Additionally, a limited save system gave rise to new strategic planning, making this a more tactical survival horror experience than a more action focused one, whilst enemies were merely incapacitated and were liable to get back up if approached again.

Unfortunately, MG:U's biggest failings were in its looks, as they were dated and flat compared to its other counterparts at the time, and that the story tried to blend too many elements of different science fiction tropes in to the mix.
