20 Most Overrated Pokémon In History

Catch 'em if you must, but don't keep believing they're good enough for your team.

Last week as we continued our Pokémon coverage ahead of the release of seventh generation instalments Sun & Moon later this year, we brought you a list of twenty severely underrated Pokémon that deserved your attention and a chance at appearing on your team.

Now it's time to look at the other side of that coin, as we consider twenty of the most overrated Pokémon in the history of the series. Even with over 700 of the monsters now in existence, it's natural that some will be powerful enough for a spot in anyone's party. Strangely, however, there are a number of Pokémon that do appear very regularly despite the fact that they aren't even all that good.

Whether it be misplaced faith in a childhood icon or just not knowing the many weaknesses of an apparently "strong" Pokémon, there could be any number of reasons why you're falling into the trap of trusting overrated battlers with each new generation of the game.

Join us as we countdown the twenty most overrated Pokémon in history. Who knows; perhaps we'll be saving you from another drastic selection mistake when Sun & Moon arrive in October!

20. Shiftry

Charizard Anime
The Pokémon Company

As a dual Grass/Dark type Pokémon, Shiftry works in a fairly unique field. This type combination makes it very attractive to a lot of users, but it also exposes it to just as many flaws and weakness. For each of the seven types that Shiftry is strong against, there are another seven that it will struggle with.

As a result, Shiftry is a Pokémon that is unpredictable outside of its comfort zones. It can be as useful as any other monster when dealing with a type advantage, but you'll hardly ever find it's able to hold its own against Pokémon with unusual movesets or against sudden changes to your opponents' team on the field.

With its stats leveraged heavily towards its two attacking options, Shiftry has little or no chance of surviving in a closely cut match. It may deal great damage with good type combos when things are going well, but we all know things scarcely stay so rosy in Pokémon battling!
