5 Classic Video Games Of The '90s

crashb This top 5 isn't going to include the usual ramblings of your out-dated 40-year-old Uncle who swears that "Pac Man" is the greatest game ever made, and - let's be honest - unless you're still dressing like Tommy Lee did once upon a a time, you probably agree with me: this top 5 is about those titles that defined the '90s and still hold relevant podiums of honor in gaming history. These games are the ones that got me hooked, the ones that encouraged me to come home from school and throw my homework aside to clock a few more hours in before dinner, inevitably the ones I now blame for my poor education. But there was something about them that you couldn't resist, these well crafted cult games were so enthralling that it was near impossible to find fault with them, unlike todays industry were titles are picked apart piece by piece on forums untill no joy can be found whilst playing. Yes a few of the more obvious titles are missing, this was intentional as I did not want any over-lapping genre's, but hopefully you can look past this and enjoy a nostalgic romp through some of the best the '90s had to offer...

5. Pokémon

If you came looking for era-defining games, then Pokémon takes the gold trophy. Built on a simple formula of catching monsters, to train and battle other people who catch monsters, the juggernaut of RPGs sprung into action in 1998 and quickly spawned an animated TV series, as well as a trading card game, a manga and countless other merchandise-based phenomena. This pop culture phenomenon started with Pokémon Red & Pokémon Blue on Gameboy, seperate versions which followed the same path with the only differance being that certain Pokémon appeared only in either of the games, this led to the utilization of the Gameboy System Link, where two trainers could swap and battle their Pokémon. I have fond memorys of being in the schoolyard, each kid thinking that their team of monsters was the strongest, hoping to find someone who would trade you a more powerfull addition to your team, and that one kid who I could just never manage to beat (If you're reading this, I'm still gunning for you, punk). It's definitely a game many will feel a nostalgic chill for, and with the release of Pokémon X & Y in October hopefully a game that will stay relevant for the next generation of gamers.
