4. You Command and Conquer
This one is slightly different, as you may have already noticed. Command and Conquer, a term Im using in reference to all the games in the franchise, puts players in the position of an unseen military general and has them organize troops, come up with battle strategies, and create a base where troops and war machines can be deployed/created. However, as you are in charge of an entire army there is no individuality among your soldiers whatsoever, leaving you caring so little about them that forty could die and it would be viewed as little more than an inconvenience. Perhaps you grow attached to certain units if they manage to stay alive long enough, but thats only because its such a rarity and their value is therefore appreciated. Saying that, I havent known anyone to mourn the loss of these units for more than a few seconds, as the ease in which you can create a group of identical fighters removes all the value from their lives. Whether youre technically the villain or not is also a matter of perspective, though a case can be made for each of the three sides (Japan, The USSR, and The Alias) all being rather morally dubious, even though one is traditionally conceived to be more sinister than the other two. The point is that working for you in this games context would mean youd be in the employment of someone who didnt value your life in the slightest and would happily send you to die 700 times over if they/you thought it would help. Obviously the version of you youd be working for would have to be a clone, as you couldnt send yourself to your death unless there was some weird time warp situation where the past you would unintentionally kill future you without knowing he/you was actually killing themself/you. Perhaps this is getting a little confusing, so lets just move on.
