When it comes to most influential games this side of the Millennium, there aren’t many that can stand toe to toe with the original Gears of War.
For a hot minute, everything coming out that wasn’t a first-person shooter seemed the be jumping on the cover-based shooter bandwagon that Gear of War popularised.
And not only that, but this game might be one of the most important to the Xbox 360's lifecycle overall.
Gears cost Microsoft an insane 10 million dollars to develop, and another billion on top of that to double the amount of RAM in each console. Did Gears of War and Epic unintentionally solidify the 360’s dominance for most of the generation? Absolutely.
But putting all of the technical details aside, it is the lore, the world and characters that drew players in. That and the fact these hulking specimens were rocking chainsaws on the end of their guns. It seems so simple, but for the time this was really out there.
