Superhero video games have been hit or miss for quite some time, and even Marvel has struggled to deliver a truly great game. It wasn't until the Arkham series hit shelves that DC seemed to really find their footing in successfully translating the comics into video games.

And coming off the success of the Mortal Kombat reboot, it made sense to have Netherrealm Studios take another crack at making a fighting game focusing on the DC universe. The result was simply fantastic, with Injustice: Gods Among Us.

With the critical and commercial success of Injustice, a followup was inevitable. The sequel is slated for a 2017 release, so in anticipation of that, here are five of the DC universe's lesser-known heroes that really deserve to be included.

5. Starfire

DC Comics

DC loves aliens. It's just a simple fact at this point considering the amount of kryptonians, martians, and other visitors from the far reaches of the galaxy seem to find themselves on Earth.

And what's better than aliens? Alien royalty. A princess of the planet Tamaran, Starfire survived a bitter rivalry with her older sister that would seem at home in Game of Thrones before coming to Earth.

There she joined the Teen Titans with her most notable connection being to Dick Grayson to whom she was engaged to for a time. She's probably most well-known for her time as a lovable and well-meaning - if socially awkward - member of the Titans in the cartoon by the same name, serving as a moral centre to the team and has become a fan favourite among both comics readers and casual fans alike.

In the Justice League cartoon, she draws her power from positive emotions manifesting themselves in various ways, though the comics place her closer in power to Superman. As such, she has access to powers such as flight and super strength, but her abilities tend to be more focused on energy projection. In the game this could translate into a number of abilities but I think it would be focused more on aerial combat with zoning abilities.
