Judging purely the gameplay trailer released so far, there was a worry that Avengers was going to be a linear action game without the kind of open world that made Spider-Man such a joyous recreation of the Marvel universe. While that's partly true, Square have made it clear that the game isn't going to be as entirely on-rails as the trailer.

Some of the story missions will play out in their own self-contained levels, but they'll be punctuated by a bunch of semi open worlds for players to explore. Rather than having one big city for fans to go nuts in, the developers are opting to throw a bunch of smaller, more varied ones at the player to keep things interesting.

It's a smart move, as it gives the developers the ability to deliver a focused, cinematic story while still offering players the freedom to explore and fully realise the toolset of each Avenger. It will also provide a way to bring the personalities of each hero to life through the different locations, rather than trying to cram it all into one hodgepodge of a city.
