Super Metroid set a high mark in terms of quality gameplay, immersive locations and brilliant character designs. Retro Studios decided to attempt to reach that mark with a fresh take on the series while it would also act as an great entry for first time Metroid players. Furthermore, they took the series to the first person perspective for the first time that would quickly prove to be the best choice they had made.

The first game quickly became one of the fastest selling GameCube games and it's sequel would also join that list with a spin on alternate dimensions as you explore gorgeous planets and find new creatures. But both of these games would compete with major competitions in the action-adventure genres from major new titles like Grand Theft Auto and Halo.

Even when Metroid Prime 3: Corruption was released on the Wii with motion controls and a more action-focussed gameplay experience, it was being beaten in sales by the emergence of HD games like Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, Halo 3 and Assassin's Creed.

The evolution of the video game industry was ultimately the biggest challenge the trilogy had to face, even with the large amount of praise it received from fans and critics alike. It would spawn spin-off titles during and after the games' developments, each trying to piggyback on the success that Retro Studios generated.
