2002 was a great year for fans as they were not also treated to Retro Studios' amazing Metroid Prime, but were also given a fantastic 2D side-scrolling game in the form of Metroid: Fusion on the Game Boy Advance.

One of the earliest titles on the then new handheld, it is still considered to be one of the best games available on the system and has remained one of the best in the series.

In this game, Samus is forced to eliminate the deadly X Parasite onboard the BSL station before it spreads and infects every living organism in the galaxy. With the introduction of the Fusion Suit to fight this parasite and absorb different abilities, this threat added more of a haunting aesthetic compared to other titles in the series. This parasite would spread through an abandoned laboratory that not also created zombified aliens, but it could copy the abilities of anything that goes into contact with it.

Because the gameplay styles between Fusion and Prime were drastically different, they both appealed to new and old fans that would bring some great success to that generation of Nintendo consoles.

Due to this popularity, the same team behind Fusion decided to remake a definitive version of the very first game for the Game Boy Advance known as Metroid: Zero Mission.
