A little over a week ago, Sony Entertainment had us all waiting with baited breath ahead of their much anticipated PlayStation 4 unveiling. In January, they invited us “to see the future” and on February 20th, the world’s media descended on New York City, cameras at the ready, pen in hand, waiting expectantly for the vast swathes of information the manufacturers were about to unleash on excited fans waiting to hear more about their next generation console.
The room was darkened, save for the glow of blue lights, and upon the giant screen erected centre-stage was beamed the buttons PlayStation fans are all too well accustomed too, X, Square, Circle, Triangle as somewhat apocalyptic music blared out before an ultra-cool VT kicked in, highlighting PlayStation consoles of old and recapping famous gameplay moments of times gone by, before more apocalyptic music blared out from the speaker system to further emphasise that yes, what we were watching was indeed cool.
But putting the pomp and circumstance of the occasion to one side, the PlayStation 4 launch event was a disappointment. In the end, all we got were a bunch of developers boring us half to death with over-extended monologues about their upcoming, equally as boring looking launch titles (excepting Ubisoft’s Watch_Dogs, which was the saving grace from the bore fest).
Also, we saw no sign of the PS4 console, just the new DualShock. A PS4 launch event without the PS4… What’s that all about, really?
It’s fair to say that having built up so much excitement for the PS4, a lot of it has fallen by the wayside and interest has now waned. Here, we take a look at 5 things Sony Entertainment can do to regain our interest.

This is stupid, 1st off, The event was a big hit. 2nd, All the launch titles they showed were good for a first event, Duh they are waiting to show the AAA games during E3. They are waiting to show PS4 during E3. Underwelming Launch titles my ass. Killzone, infamous,Drive club, etc. Im guessing the writer is a Xbox fanboy -_- . PS4>Xbox720.
As much as I agree with the third one (“Revive the old school games”), I absolutely disagree with the rest of them. Also, I don’t think at all that the PS4 presentation was “a borefest”, that it “disappointed fans”, and some other stuff that you wrote. I mean, speak for yourself. I liked it, although I’m still a bit disappointed by how the control looks, but it is what it is.
As far as I’m concerned, it was a good move by Sony not to reveal everything that they had in store for the masses. Sony played it smart and decided to keep some things in the backburner so Microsoft can make its move. Sony wants to test its main competitor (Microsoft) and see if they can outdo or, at least try to bring up something worthy to the next generation of consoles.
By the way, I’m now looking forward to see what Microsoft has in store for its next console. I hope that they can blow us away, as well. (Yeah, I like all three companies).
I don’t understand why some people are still complaining about things such as the absence of the console itself. I’m pretty sure that Sony will reveal the final console design and the rest of its secrets for the upcoming E3 event. Also, you say that there aren’t enough cool games announced for the Playstation 4′s launch, but you forget about companies like Media Molecule and Blizzard (Yes! Blizzard!), which are preparing their own stuff for the Playstation 4. There are many games announced for the PS4 (Destiny, a new Final Fantasy, DriveClub, Knack, Deep Down, Killzone, Infamous, Watch Dogs, for example) and I’m 100% sure that more will be revealed along the way. Sony needs system sellers from day 1 (They can’t make the same mistake that Nintendo did with the WiiU). I hope that we can see a new Uncharted, another Ratchet & Clank, a new Metal Gear Solid entry and the revival of old franchises that have been forgotten by Sony.
As for me, things like a final price, a definitive release date, and other stuff are not that damn important. What matters is that the PS4 is looming in the horizon and it looks like a big deal. I hope that it delivers. At least you didn’t touch upon the same thing that some people are still whining about: The backwards compatibility. Yeah, remember when websites like What Culture, IGN or Gamespot didn’t exist and people didn’t b!tch about backwards compatibility, only replaced their old console with the next generation console? Those were the days.
I have an xbox 360 after years loyal to playstation for two reasons, one the price of ps3 and the pain in the rear the ps2 I had. It would break all the time. To gain me back basically they jsut need to announce they are NOT doing that one game one console thing, and IF xbox do then Ill preorder my ps4 the day of release.
I’m not entirely sure but I remember the PS2 having a low failure rate (and Ps3 being even lower) and you say you got a 360 because of not wanting your system to break? the console with the highest failure rate? Also not sure if you are aware of this but Ps3 is cheaper than the xbox 360 now. Anyways, can’t say yet which console I will be buying this generation until Microsoft announces their console but I will say I don’t plan on getting the Wii-U anytime soon. Hopefully within time I’ll be able to get all 3 like I did this generation.
Really Number 3 was Revive “Old School Games”. Don’t get me wrong I loved the Crash Bandicoot series when it was on the Ps1 but times have change and most old ips do not live up to what they once did. If anything you should be asking for more new IPs. The one thing I am gale to own a ps3 instead of the xbox was the amount of good exclusive games. The ps3 was gived with new IPs and some great ones example Uncharted series, Little Planet series, Heavy Rain, Resistance series and Dark Souls.
Also be careful what you wish for you might just get it. Since the dreamcast days sonic has come back in so many bad games only make you wish sega would just put him to rest. If they are to bring back some of the old IPs they should make sure to explain the game and put new ideas. These old brands did not just disappared for no reason.
to your first point….when sony invited us to “see the future” you would rather that have been a plastic box? I see you claiming that this conference was a letdown because the form factor wasn’t revealed, but what difference does that really make? Would you rather have had 2 hours of video of someone stroking a piece of plastic that have actual games on your games system? And to say that the only title anyone is excited for is watch dogs is a vast understatement that ignores the potential of developers that have created some of the generations most classic games…missed the mark on these, outside of the bringing back classic games point, that one is valid….but who needs concrete pricing & retail specs 9 months out when we could be looking at the actual games & services inside of these things? Sony isn’t trying to hype a piece of plastic and a dollar amount after all
This has to have been made by another american critic! and this is comming from another american! Shame on your lack of emotion sir! =/
All this was sonys tactics lol. They didnt show the price or release date because they want to wait for Microsoft to say theres, then beat that. Also don’t bring classic games back, look what happened to spyro in SkyLanders….. :’(
The console design may not have been completed yet btw idk
It’s as if they couldn’t wait to show us the PS4 even if it was only a glimpse. that’s probably why we didn’t see the actual box.
