Super Mario 3D Land: Review Round-Up

Reviews for Super Mario 3D Land are popping up and here's the early verdict.

some news of the boost in sales for the Nintendo's 3DS and its software in Japan, thanks to the release of Super Mario 3D Land. Now that reviews are beginning to pop up online it's quite clear why. Current reception for the platformer has been unanimously positive - with many reviews praising the game as a must have title for the 3DS and one which nostalgically recalls classic Mario games as well as having its very own surprises. Here's a round up of some of the reviews currently online. IGN - 9.5 (Editor's Choice Award) "As a whole, 3D Land is brilliant and addictive, and should do for 3D-enhanced platforming what the original Super Mario Bros. did for 2D platforming. If you own a 3DS system, you have no choice - you simply must own this game." Eurogamer - 9/10 "Super Mario 3D Land feels like the heir to Super Mario Bros. 3, and it's moments like this that really drive that impression home. It's not just the Tanooki Suit, the music blocks, the pirate galleons or a handful of familiar tunes. The sense of connection is structural, almost textural." Gamesradar - 9/10 "It expertly builds on franchise history, has tons of clever ideas, and even with the rare control hang-ups, it stands tall in the realm of 3D platformers, especially compared to the paltry library of games the 3DS currently has." CVG - 9/10 "Super Mario 3D Land wears that '3D' with pride. Constant camera shifts frame the action in the most pleasing 3D way. It leers down as Mario teeters over the abyss, drops to his side as pistons fire at his face and slips behind him for an array of projectile-triggered wincing." Destructoid - 8.5 "Super Mario 3D Land is a great little game that pretty much every 3DS owner should invest in. While it's nowhere near as intricately challenging as the old scrollers from which it draws inspiration. and it lacks the ambitious scale of Super Mario Galaxy, it is still packed with innovative gameplay and that unmistakable Mario charm. " 1UP - B+ "Despite the occasional moment of awkward perspective, and regardless of Nintendo's archaic reliance on pointless extra lives as your primary reward, every moment of 3D Land is a pleasure to play. Mario moves a little slowly, but he's agile and responsive nevertheless. Each level is a compact, self-contained challenge, and the whole game strikes a great balance between reverent nostalgia and gleeful reinterpretation (as well as a perfect balance between 2D and 3D game design). It pushes the 3DS to the limit of what can (and should) be done on the platform. " GamesTM - 8/10 "If ever there was a game designed to appeal to the nostalgia of just about any Nintendo gamer then this is surely it. Yet, at the same time, there€™s something altogether more original about Super Mario 3D Land when it comes to the actual gameplay. Sitting somewhere between New Super Mario Bros. and Super Mario Galaxy in form, 3D Land plays around with perspective in some extremely creative ways." EDGE - 8/10 "Super Mario 3D Land is a magpie of a game, but it fuses its 2D and 3D influences to make a Mario that feels fresher than any handheld Mario in years. It€™s not a new Galaxy, but it€™s an ideal companion piece to EAD Tokyo€™s Wii games." Gamespot UK - 8/10 "It successfully translates the classic, 2D Mario feel into a 3D setting that feels unique from the series' other 3D releases. Some of the game's other features fall disappointingly short of this creative mark, but you€™re still left with a fun-filled platformer loaded with content. " So, there you have it. Are you excited to get your hands on Mario's latest ? Super Maro 3D Land is released on the 18th November.
