Super Mario Odyssey: Ranking Every Boss Encounter From Worst To Best

7. Mechawiggler

Madame Broodal Mario Odyssey
Nintendo

First introduced in Super Mario World, Wigglers are caterpillar-like enemies which have become a mainstay of the Mario series, even earning themselves a handful of playable appearances in spinoff titles. Usually cute and happy go lucky (until Mario jumps on them) the boss of New Donk City is a far cry from the Wiggler you’re used to.

The appropriately named Mechawiggler is an enormous robotic version of the classic enemy, which is fought in an atmospheric showdown during a fearsome rainstorm. Mario must capture a tank-like baddy and utilise their powers; this turns the boss battle into a rudimentary shooter level. Mechawiggler crawls across buildings to dodge Mario’s projectile attacks, but, awesome as this sounds, the fight fails to live up to its potential. Unfortunately, tank-Mario does not handle at all well, thanks to some dodgy motion-control (albeit optional), and this makes the boss infinitely more frustrating than intended.

It’s also a shame that Mechawiggler doesn’t more resemble the classic Wiggler design. The mechanical and electronic theme fits well with the level’s setting, but it looks more like a spider/centipede hybrid than a caterpillar, so the whole thing is rather a missed opportunity.
