With Resident Evil 6 hitting stores later this year, it’s fitting to revisit the franchise and have a look back at the games that made Resident Evil a popular name. From a simple mansion exploration to ass-kicking in Africa, the Resident Evil games have plenty of varied settings and also have a variety of mainstay characters that have become synonymous with the series. A word of notice here that this list may contain SPOILERS for the games. Enough of that for the intro, let’s get into the list:
7. Resident Evil 3: Nemesis
Starting off our list is the third game in the series, Resident Evil 3: Nemesis. The most memorable aspect of this game was the inclusion of Nemesis, a giant tyrant-like monster that would chase you around as you explored areas. You played primarily as Jill Valentine, a returning character from Resident Evil 1, wearing a slightly sexier tube top compared to her S.T.A.R.S. uniform in the original game.
Whilst a lot of people point to Resident Evil 4 as being the first title in the RE universe to embrace the ‘action’ genre, RE3 was a small step in that direction anyway. Not only was there the chase sequences with Nemesis, players also had the ability to dodge attacks and quickly turn 180-degrees. All of which were new to the series.
RE3′s plot centers around Jill basically trying to escape from Raccoon City. She meets a few other survivors along the way, and depending on player choices, can receive one of two different endings. Regardless of choice though, Raccoon City will still be decimated by a nuclear missile.
Overall, RE3 was a bit lackluster. Aside from Nemesis chasing you around, the game doesn’t have many other memorable moments; unlike the previous two games. The gameplay and puzzles were similar too, but the game lacked the same drive that pushed gamers to enjoy the earlier entries.

Resident Evil 4 is awful – while the gameplay was fun back in 2005, the story and the characters were atrocious. Leon is quite possibly the worst protagonist I have ever played as; his unfunny quips and his emo hair fop made me hate the character I was playing as…the first time this has ever happened to me in my life as a gamer. (And don’t even get me started on his abilities, whether it be leaping across a chasm and catching the other side – after escaping a walking stone statue of Salazar, or the beyond ridiculous acrobat flips he does in the laser hallway. The events in this game are just stupid.) And there are ZERO horror/scary moments in RE4. None whatsoever.
There is a ton of ammo available throughout the game: why be scared when you can prance around the Spanish countryside and murder Spaniards? (And how is killing Africans in Africa racist, yet murdering Spaniards in Spain is not? Please answer that, N’Gai Croal.)
Again, I understand that RE4 revitalized the franchise and introduced an awesome game mechanic…but it’s really such a poor game otherwise. RE4 ruined the old school charm of what made Resident Evil well, Resident Evil. The action elements minorly present in RE3 and RECV were certainly the beginning of the turn toward action, but RE4 was the nail in the coffin for survival horror. Since RE4, this series is just ACTION. And geez, look at RE6…the gameplay looks like gunplay mixed with far too many QTEs. Yikes.
But as this is a list of the BEST RESIDENT EVIL games (which is entirely subjective), I have a hard time believing that someone that has played all of the titles in this franchise would not vote REmake and RE2 as the top 2 games in this franchise.
My order would be 1)RE 4 without a doubt the best RE game made so far and the reason I got interested in RE again, 2) RE 2 again a game starring Leon BUT 3) WILL HAVE TO GO TO RE 5 coz it was so much awesome and fun playing that game, true compared to RE 4 which managed to mix all ingredients perfectly RE lacked any real scares but still the action was EPIC and it was an awesome fun entertaining experience, can’t wait till RE 6 comes out,it stars yet again my fav Leon S Kennedy :) and hopefully will rock as RE 4 did
Glad to see the comments, but I think if you like either RE1, RE2 or RE4 the most, then really you aren’t all that different from me. RE1 and RE2 for being the best of the classical formula, whilst RE4 for being the best of the new take.
I still think all of them have a creepy atmosphere that suits the RE Universe really. I hope RE6 does deliver.
