In an interview with Japanese game magazine Famitsu, Rockstar Games co-found Dan Houser was asked whether we might ever see them make a first person shooter and perhaps incorporate elements into the recently teased at Grand Theft Auto 5;

“We’re deliberately avoiding that right now… It’s in our DNA to avoid doing what other companies are doing.”

With most other Western game developers are looking at first-person shooters as their key titles and with Gears of War 3 currently topping the 2011 North American charts for games marketed directly towards adult males, Rockstar are resisting the temptation of turning their biggest franchise into a FPS. The same apparently can be said of Max Payne 3, which does involve shooting but isn’t classed as a first-person shooter.

“I suppose you could say that Max Payne 3 is something close to an FPS, but there are really unique aspects to the setting and gameplay there, too, not just in the story… You have to have originality in your games; you have to have some kind of interesting message.”

Personally as a huge fan of Rockstar’s output but not particularly a huge gamer, long may this continue as we don’t want the Grand Theft Auto franchise being diluted and becoming, ‘just another FPS’. There’s way too many of those on the market right now.
