The art of listening. Don't assume.

Listening to the radio remains an intimate and enjoyable past-time, even in an era of excess and plenty in which every piece of music you could ever want is readily available at your fingertips. There is just something genuinely enjoyable - even communal - about knowing that you are listening in on something that other people are concurrently tuned into. It's a feeling that no amount of streaming or downloading can ever replicate.

The internet has made this experience even more transnational than ever before, as pretty much every radio station worth checking out is available globally simply by downloading an app for a smartphone or visiting the respective station's website. While the rise of Beats Radio has seen an increasing interest in "tuning in", there are many stations that you may not even know of that are highlighting fascinating sounds and promoting a sense of community.

10 of the most interesting, weird and progressive radio stations are listed here, with the only stipulation being that they must be listenable worldwide. From quirky little arty talkies to promoters of international club sounds, from crowdfunded efforts to the BBC's best music station (and it's not Radio 1!), you'll find a wide selection to suit your every mood.

10. XRAY FM

1039946

XRAY FM is based in Portland and it features a :blend of talk, music and culture" that is a trend of most of the stations on this list. What sets it apart from so many of the others included here, though, is its musical diversity. Where others may be dedicated to rock, or avant-garde, or club sounds, XRAY revels in eclecticism.

Its primarily local DJs bring in funk, soul, R&B, metal, rock, indie, psychedelia, club, hip-hop and everything in between, with the label running an anything-goes and everything-is-worthy-of-inclusion ethos. This stretches to its talk shows too, in which an unbiased and objective study of international and local events is foregrounded and both perspectives of any argument are clearly stated.

XRAY FM's all-inclusive motto is that "Radio is yours. We are honored to bring you some." Why not go and check them out?
