Roller derby certainly isn't for the faint-hearted, but you will have become a stronger person thanks to it. But that isn't to say that it's just the tough, mean girl sport it seems to have become known as.

The sport is about belonging, and about community: it's full of laughter and long-term friendships and while you inevitably do get sick of people thinking you're a tom-boy just because you play roller derby, that image is as outdated as the thinking behind it.

Roller derby just isn't a sport to you, it is a way of life. You miss parties for matches, injure yourself practicing and pour all of your money and time into it. It's a passion, no matter how many problems that come with it, and you won't stop playing for anyone because you finally found a sport you're good at and love.

Regardless of the threats of injury, it's hard to care when you love to skate as much as you do. Why should you slow down for the world, after all?

Here are 15 problems only roller derby girls will understand.

15. Having Bruises All Over Especially At Special Occasions

These aren't just your average everyday bruises, these bruises are the bruises to end them all.

They always seem to sprout out when you have an event to go to, prompting your friends and family will gasp in horror whenever you show any bare skin to your amusement.

Bruises are like a badge of honour in roller derby. So keep showing them off, no matter how many stares you get.

I love music, especially the North-East local music scene. My obsession of unicorns is getting too much, my collection is growing out of control. I like animals so I don't eat them. Lover of all things vintage and ugly. Oh and i'm one of those ginger people. Twitter/Instagram @beccaBLC
