In almost every case, it would be impossible to justify placing a player without a World Championship final to his name in the top five of this list but we have to make an exception with James Wade.

The left-hander is a seven-time major winner and has featured in the semi-finals of every PDC televised tournament. It has been almost five years since he won a televised ranking event but after issues away from the board, the 32-year-old is beginning to look like the player that rivalled Phil Taylor between 2007 and 2011.

During that time, Wade won the World Matchplay and both the UK Open and World Grand Prix on two occasions. He also added the Premier League to his collection in 2009 before producing one of the best comebacks in a final late in 2014 when beating Mervyn King to win The Masters.

Since the start of 2015, Wade has been superb in floor tournaments, reaching as many as eight finals, while he famously ended Taylor's winning streak at the Matchplay before losing to Michael van Gerwen in the final.

Wade may still have to find one more gear to win another high-profile event but he is playing some of his best darts in years and he looks like he believes that he can beat the top four in the rankings, even when they produce their 'A' game.
