9. Allan Simonsen - Barcelona To Charlton Athletic (£300,000)
Possibly the strangest transfer of all time, Allan Simonsen's decision in the early 1980s to join then Second Division side Charlton Athletic following the termination of his contract at Barcelona left many scratching their heads. The European World Footballer of the Year in 1977, the Dane had had a glittering career with Borussia Mönchengladbach and Barcelona, until the latter signed a certain Diego Maradona from Boca Juniors. According to La Liga rules at the time, only two non- Spanish players could be present in any teams starting line-up. This meant that Simonsen would have to compete with both Maradonna and Bernd Schuster for a place in the Barcelona side. Simonsen saw this as a personal insult and so arranged for his contract to be terminated, and while he was approached by both Real Madrid and Tottenham Hostpur, he opted to join Charlton Athletic, to enjoy a less stressful life. However this fairytale lasted for just three months, in which the striker had scored an impressive 9 goals in 16 appearances, as the London club struggled to finance both the Dane's wages and
£300,000 transfer fee. Simonsen subsequently opted to join his home-town club Vejile BK, where he played out the remaining 6 years of his career. While his stay was brief, for sheer craziness, and the minute chance of something similar ever again occurring, Simonsen's move to the Valley comfortably makes this list.
