With all of the excitement and furore surrounding the recent arrivals on Tyneside, Geordie fans are seemingly refusing to address the ten elephants in the room that still need putting down. Yes, Newcastle have badly needed to extend their squad depth this summer, but it's important that the squad is made up of the right players, and not just the right number of players. During Newcastle€™s alarming post-Christmas slide, as Pardew€™s threadbare squad lurched from one miserable defeat to another, and the lack of quality throughout the squad was exposed for all to see. It wasn't just that the available players were too sparse, it's that some of the players entrusted with first team duties weren't good enough.

So far, Dan Gosling has packed his bags for a side more accustomed to his limited talents in Bournemouth, and Shola Ameobi has trundled slowly to the door - albeit via the most unlikely of World Cup appearances - but the club are still stuck with an array of deadwood that needs to be trimmed, if Newcastle are to make any headway over the coming seasons.

Every squad needs a bit of depth, but when there are players who are simply intent on picking up a wage, or seemingly incapable of shaking off their injury demons, the chord must ultimately be cut, and the way made open for youngsters like Rolando Aarons, Remi Streete and Adam Campbell to come through as support instead.
